Using lube is a great way to make sure that both partners stay comfortable and feel sexy during the act. In fact, I ALWAYS recommend that couples use lube: when things are nice and wet, it’s just more fun! Adding lube can:
- Decrease painful friction
- Enhance sexual arousal by stimulating the flow of blood to the vulva
- Lubricate the clitoris
However, be careful when you are choosing what kind of lube to use. First of all, not all lubes can be used with sex toys.
- Water-based lube: Can be used on any toy! It doesn’t degrade toys and is totally body safe.
- Silicone-based lube: Can be used on toys made of hard substances (like glass, marble, and hard plastic). DO NOT use on silicone or jelly based toys.
- Oil-based lubes: Do not use on toys, period.
Second of all, things like parabens, petrochemicals, DEA, Glycerin, methylisothiazolinone and fragrance are found in many commercially available brands of lube. Some of those ingredients can result in nasty reactions – that will definitely kill the mood! Sticking with an all-natural lube is your best bet.
Here are some of my favourite all natural lubes!
Oil-Based Lube: Coconut Oil
Yup, the same stuff you cook with! Extra-virgin coconut oil has a low melting point: just rub it between your hands and it will melt into a luxuriously smooth oil. As an added bonus, coconut oil contains natural antifungal properties so it could help reduce the risk of infections when used. Just do NOT use coconut oil – or any other oil – with latex condoms. The oil may weaken the latex and increase the risk of breakage.
Water-Based Lube: Sliquid – H2O Lube.
This lube is a paraben-free, glycerin-free, gentle water-based lubricant. Unlike most other personal lubricants out there, it has no sugar derivatives and is thickened with plant cellulose. It is safe for all sexual activity, is condom, toy friendly and will never cause yeast infections and UTIs. Sliquid H20 is 100% vegan, is unflavoured, unscented, non-staining and easy to cleanup.
Water-Based Lube: Organic Glide
The only active ingredients in this lubricant include: olus oil, olive fruit oil, argania spinosa kernel oil, and pichia/resveratrol ferment extract. It isn’t too thick or sticky, and glides on smoothly. This lube bills itself as especially fantastic for menopausal women.
